As the last of eight presenters at Sam Sullivan’s Public Salon on Thursday night, Chuck Davis received a standing ovation from the 500 audience members attending. Two days earlier Chuck had received word from his doctor that he had incurable cancer and had only a short time to live. Global Civic Executive Director Sam Sullivan said “this was not the presentation we originally thought he would be giving”.
Chuck described how he had devoted all of his energy over the last few years to writing the History of Metro Vancouver but that he would not be able to complete it. He appealed to the audience for help in finding a writer and funding to finish the work. At the reception after the Public Salon one of the Society’s Founding Sponsors committed $5000 while another Founding Sponsor agreed to manage the funds through her law firm. Another supporter of the Global Civic Policy Society Phil Boname committed to hosting a fundraiser.
CityCaucus Blogger Mike Klassen attended the Salon and within an hour had a story published complete with the entire text. The Vancouver Sun took the story and text from his blog site and had it up on their site a short time later. In a recent e-mail from Chuck he wrote “what an outpouring of support and friendship your Public Salon has generated for me. A thousand thanks doesn’t begin to cover it”.
Global Civic is pleased that it’s Public Salon is playing a vital role in helping see this important project move forward. Please consider contributing to help Chuck deliver this important legacy to future generations.
